Farmers' markets, sometimes called greenmarkets, are usually held out-of-doors, in public spaces, where farmers can sell produce to the public. Since much of the produce at a farmer's market is grown locally you reduce the carbon footprint when purchasing it, since it's not been trucked across the state (or country, or world!) for you to eat. Many chefs also prefer locally grown produce. Not only is it frequently fresher but it contributes to the terroir, or local flavor, of your food.
