Taking shorter showers saves water, but still take showers, please.

Looking to save even more water after you've installed a low-flow shower head? Consider trying two-minute Navy showers. The phrase Navy shower comes from showering on naval ships, where conservation of fresh water is important.

The water savings can be significant:

  • a typical 10 minute shower can use as many as 60 gallons of H2O (230 liters), whereas
  • a Navy shower uses around three gallons (11 liters).

Taking Navy showers for a year would save 15,000 gallons of H2O. Not ready to make such a commitment? Try a Navy shower every other time you shower.

To take a Navy shower:

  1. Turn on the water and wet your body.
  2. Turn off the water while you soap up and clean your body.
  3. Turn the water back on to rinse.
  4. Turn off the water while you shampoo.
  5. Turn on the water while you wash your hair.
